Keeping On

It’s been a while since we posted, so there’s a bit to catch up on. Afton hits her 6-month post transplant date, 3 days after her second birthday - this month.

After the transplant, and with what we knew about the liver she received, we didn’t think we’d get this far on this liver. However, despite a few infections and a couple sicknesses here and there, Afton’s new liver is working as well as it could, by all clinical measure. Additionally, the problematic lack of blood flow in the hepatic artery has since been averted by Afton’s body which has created collateral blood flow around the main artery.

So for now, we are just trying to keep her healthy and let her body continue to get used to her new organ, hopefully allowing us to continually ween down the anti-rejection medications (which are immuno-suppressant, making her immune system compromised).

We are also working with Afton in various therapies to help her function and learn in her new, more hospital-free life.

When she’s feeling good, which is more ever these days, her smile says it all.

Afton’s nanny and best friend Brittany was recently accepted into a full-time nursing program, and because of this she won’t be continuing on as Afton’s nanny in 2011. Brit will be missed, as she has been such a big help during the first couple years of Afton’s unimaginably difficult life. We have begun the search for a new nanny for the next chapter of Afton’s life.
