July 4th
Afton has been in and out of the hospital since her transplant surgery. Overall, she has been a good sport but is definitely developing a strong preference for mom and dad. Strangers can be stressful to her because she is never quite sure what they are going to do. When we are home a nurse comes every other day. This is usually hard for her to constantly be tampered with.
Afton’s liver function continues to worsen. She has not yet been relisted for a new liver but it is probably safe to say that is going to happen soon. She is suffering from chronic infection. When she is on antibiotics, she stays pretty healthy. However, once she stops that treatment she gets the same infection again. The longest she has been able to go without antibiotics is 4 days.
This is frustrating because she gets extremely ill from these infections. Tonight on the 4th of July she is in the hospital dealing with this same infection. She is pretty sick but her fever did come down later in the afternoon. So now we just need to comfort her until the antibiotics kick in once again.
Hopefully we will learn more this week about the long and short term plan for afton.
Happy 4th of July! Be safe and hopefully we will be able to see more of you in the near future.
